According to the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the prevalence of diabetes in Malaysia is rising steadily over the past years with the percentage of Malaysian adults diagnosed with diabetes rocketed from 13.4% in 2015 to 18.3% in 2019.* Sun Life Malaysia is committed to slowing the advance of this chronic disease. This November, in conjunction with #WorldDiabetesAwareness month, we continued our pledge to be an active voice in championing greater awareness for diabetes through a series of community education and empowerment programmes. First, we partnered with 6 organisations, namely the Food Aid Foundation, Women of Will, Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Diabetes Malaysia, National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF), and the National Diabetes Institute (NADI) Malaysia to distribute 1,200 nutritional care packs and diabetes awareness children comic books to the underprivileged and diabetes patients across Klang Valley. These nutritional packs, consisting of oats, granola and nuts, aimed to spread the awareness of how healthy diet and lifestyle could help Malaysian prevent and control diabetes. This year was the second year we ran this activity – in 2020, we distributed 1,000 packs across 5 organisations. We also teamed up with HOPE worldwide Malaysia to host a series of diabetes talks for 120 B40 community members living around the Sentul area. The highlights of the 2-day talks were how healthy eating could prevent diabetes and a hands-on enzyme making session. Each participant also brought home a healthy food basket and a diabetes awareness comic book. * National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019
As the famous proverb goes, “Knowledge is power” – it is an important weapon which can be used to bring meaningful actions that will change the world. For many people, especially children, spotting the early signs of diabetes means better chances to prevent, manage and cure this disease. With this in mind, Sun Life Malaysia strives to broaden the engagement of its diabetes awareness programme, to include younger children under the age of twelve. To engage and empower more children and their parents, we commissioned the creation of “Pengembaraan Kem Sunny”, a fun comic book to demystify this chronic disease. The comic book illustrates the journey of a young girl named Nora on her journey to discover and then fight against diabetes. It also features varied fun activities on topics such as healthy diet, active lifestyles and more. Through this comic book, we hope to inform and educate our children and community about the difference they can make in their everyday actions to prevent diabetes.
As we draw closer to the end of the year, for many of us, it is time to bring out the financial checklist. It is a good time to review the goals we have made beginning of the year and set new goals. It is also the perfect time to ask yourselves – did you save the money that you needed for your life goals? There are many reasons to save money – be it for a new car, a new home or for emergency situations and whatever the reason may be, savings serves as a critical financial safety net in the event of unforeseen circumstances. In November, we kick-started a Savings Campaign featuring Sun Infinity-i and Sun Hajj, to provide easy tips and advices to help Clients take control of their money and start saving for a financially secure future. Stay tuned as we have more exciting campaign activations happening up to end January 2022.
